The research of many scientists is focused on helping us understand and solve various real-world problems. An important part of this work is getting the information learned out to policy makers, and the lay public. The skills that are needed to do this are not innate?they need to be learned and practiced. The purpose of this seminar is to help students do just that. We will be learning & practicing: how to speak to the media (both written and video), congress, and the general public; how to write op-eds and articles for the general public; how to ?package? your ideas in ways that are interesting (exciting titles, informative abstracts, persuasive grant proposals); how to make it through the peer-review process with your ego intact; how to give interesting scientific talks to scientists and the general public; and learning what a science advocate is.
