The Center for Environmental Science and Policy will be hosting the fifth annual Sustainability in the Yaqui Valley conference October 20-22, 2003 in San Carlos, Mexico. Thirty-five researchers are anticipated to attend this year's conference including Stanford University professors, graduate and post-doctorate students, and Mexican collaborators from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), National Water Commission (CNA), and the Center for Conservation and Use of Natural Resources (CECARENA). The conference is held to discuss the past, present and future conditions of sustainable development in the Yaqui Valley, Sonora, Mexico and to chart future directions of research and outreach. 2003 marks the twelfth year of Stanford's research presence in the Valley. Research initiatives include the analysis of different dimensions of agriculture and variability, the role of institutions and impact of national and international policies, water resource use and management, aquaculture development, the affect on estuaries of upland land-use change, and the burgeoning role of the livestock sector.
