The Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) presented Donald Kennedy, editor-in-chief of Science, the "Support for Science Award" for a lifetime of achievement in the support of science. Martin Apple, President of CSSP and previous award recipient, honored Kennedy at the Council Presidents Meeting on May 2nd in Washington DC.
"Throughout his career," comments Apple, "Donald Kennedy has shown exceptional leadership and in-depth understanding of the scientific, educational and research process. He brought his high quality insights and verve into key roles that forged many important developments in science policy and helped shape the scientific future of the U.S., and around the world."
Kennedy's accomplished career includes service as president of Stanford University from 1980 to 1992; commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration from 1977-79; founding director of Stanford's Program in Human Biology from 1973-77; chair of the Department of Biology from 1964-1972; and Bing Professor of Environmental Science and Policy.
In his current position as editor-in-chief of Science, the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has enhanced the magazine's standing as a world leader for scientific research and contributed timely editorials that have lifted important science issues to the forefront of the public arena. Kennedy continues to contribute valuable scientific research in the interdisciplinary fields of health and environmental policy as a senior fellow at the Center for Environmental Science and Policy at the Stanford Institute for International Studies.
Apple concluded his congratulatory remarks by acknowledging Kennedy as "an informed, admired and stabilizing voice that helps shape science policy in a nation and a world in need of continuing advances in science."
The Council of Scientific Society Presidents is an organization of presidents, presidents-elect, and recent past presidents of about sixty scientific federations and societies whose combined membership numbers well over 1.5 million scientists and science educators. Since 1973, CSSP has served as a strong national voice in fostering wise science policy, in support of science and science education, as the premier national science leadership development center, and as a forum for open, substantive exchanges on emerging scientific issues.
Donald Kennedy is housed in the Center for Environmental Science and Policy one of five major research centers at the Stanford Institute for International Studies, the university's primary forum for interdisciplinary research on international issues and challenges.
