The Role of Freshwater Forested Wetlands in the Economy of Kosrae
1998-2000 (completed)
INVESTIGATORS
Walter P. Falcon (Principal Investigator)
Rosamond L. Naylor

In order to understand the population's use and subjective valuation of freshwater wetlands on the island of Kosrae, we conducted a will conduct and analyze surveys to determine the use and understanding of freshwater (Terminalia) wetlands, as well as the desire to have (or not to have) conservation policies for these wetland areas. This work will be integrated into a broader ecological study of Terminalia forests on Kosrae conducted by the Pacific Institute for Forestry.

A second project objective deals with the analysis of the importance of mangroves on Yap and a comparison to the Kosrae results. Information will be collected on patterns of immigration and emigration for the four island states of FSM as a basis for understanding possible future changes to natural resource policies and will be disseminated to forestry personnel and communities of FSM.
